The US and the Taliban met to thrash out elements of a deal to bring a close to Afghanistan's 18-year conflict at the second day of renewed talks in Doha on Sunday.The US, which invaded Afghanistan and toppled the Taliban in 2001, wants to withdraw thousands of troops and turn the page on its longest ever war.But it would first seek assurances from the insurgents that they will renounce Al-Qaeda and stop other militants like the Islamic State group using the country as a haven.The talks, now in their eighth round, began on Saturday but it was unclear if they would extend into a third day, with neither side commenting on progress by late Sunday.A Taliban source earlier told AFP efforts had been made to organize a direct meeting between US envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad and Taliban co-founder Mullah Baradar, who heads the movement's political wing.The men have met previously, as recently as May but there was no confirmation of any meeting at this latest round of talks.A coalition led by Washington ousted the Taliban in late 2001 accusing it of harboring Al-Qaeda jihadists who claimed the September 11 attacks against the US that killed almost 3,000 people.But despite a rapid conclusion to the conventional phase of the war, the Taliban have proved formidable insurgents, bogging down US troops for years.Washington is hoping to strike a peace deal with the Taliban by September 1 -- ahead of Afghan polls due the same month, and US presidential elections due in 2020.US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday that "we've made a lot of progress. We're talking.""We are pursuing a peace agreement not a withdrawal agreement, a peace agreement that enables withdrawal," Khalilzad tweeted on Friday as he arrived in Doha after talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad."Our presence in Afghanistan is conditions-based, and any withdrawal will be conditions-based."In another sign of progress, the Afghan government has formed a negotiating team for separate peace talks with the Taliban that diplomats hope could be held as early as later this month.'Total mess in our country'The Washington Post reported Thursday that an initial deal to end the war would see the US force in Afghanistan reduced to as low as 8,000 from the current level of around 14,000.In exchange, the Taliban would abide by a ceasefire, renounce Al-Qaeda, and talk to the Kabul administration.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US wanted to "reduce the resources" deployed to Afghanistan as he visited Sydney on Sunday.An Afghan official hinted last week that the government of President Ashraf Ghani was preparing for direct talks with the Taliban, the details of which have yet to be announced."We have no preconditions to begin talks, but the peace agreement is not without conditions," Ghani wrote in Pashto on his Facebook page on Friday ahead of the talks."We want a republic government not an emirate," he said, a challenge to the Taliban which has insisted on reverting to the "Islamic Emirate" name Afghanistan bore under its rule."The negotiations will be tough, and the Taliban should know that no Afghan is inferior in religion or courage to them."The thorny issues of power-sharing with the Taliban, the role of regional powers including Pakistan and India, and the fate of Ghani's administration also remain unresolved.The latest US-Taliban encounter follows last month's talks between influential Afghans and the Taliban which agreed a "roadmap for peace" -- but stopped short of calling for a ceasefire.Kabul resident Somaya Mustafa, 20, said her country desperately needed a peace deal -- but only one in which the Taliban "accept women and their achievements." "It is a total mess in our country right now. And if it continues, women will suffer more than anyone else," she said. The United Nations has said that civilian casualty rates across Afghanistan matched record levels last month, following a dip earlier in the year.On Sunday, two people were killed in a blast claimed by the IS-linked Khorasan Province group targeting Afghan television staff in Kabul.And in the southern province of Kandahar, at least seven Afghan police officers were killed when a group of colleagues thought to be loyal to the Taliban opened fire, officials said.

"I love the guy,'' Azzam said in a phone interview from San Marcos, Texas, where he attends Texas State University. "He had the character and the charisma.''Azzam said Anchondo had started a business in El Paso, building things from granite and stone, and made it successful through hard work. He also was on the verge of completing a home for his family. Now, his wife is dead and he himself might not have survived."It makes you question your faith almost,'' said Azzam, who is Muslim. "Nicholas was dedicated to caring for others,'' university President Malachi Van Tassell said in a statement. The university, in Loretto, Pennsylvania, is the oldest Franciscan institution of higher learning in the United States.The family released the following statement through a relative: "We are heartbroken by the loss of our Nicholas in this senseless act on August 4. As our family grieves, we ask for privacy at this time. Thank you.''Cumer had been in Dayton as part of his internship program with the Maple Tree Cancer Alliance, which strives to improve the quality of life for individuals battling cancer through exercise, nutrition, and faith. Maple Tree Cancer Alliance offered Cumer a full-time position just days before he was killed, the organization said on its website. She said her son-in-law, Memo Garcia, was shot twice in the leg and once in the back. She said her daughter was in stable condition and her son-in-law was in critical condition.Jessica Coca Garcia's father, Don Coca, said they have family in the El Paso area who were able to be with the couple. Wazazi wanatembea kifua mbele pindi binti yao anapoolewa, tena wanafurahia zaidi binti huyo anapoolewa akiwa angali bado hajazaa.Wanamshukuru Mungu kwa binti yao kujitunza. Wanamshukuru binti kwa kuwapa heshima katika familia yao na ndiyo maana siku ya sherehe ya kuagwa (send off) wazazi wanafurahi sana kuagana na binti yao kwa heshima.Hali hiyo huwa inaleta shauku kubwa kwa warembo wengi kutamani kuingia kwenye ndoa. Wengi wanaguswa na rekodi za wanawake wenzao ambao wamejitunza na hatimaye kuwaletea heshima wazazi wao.Kinyume chake, wengi wamejikuta wakijilaumu kwa kushindwa kuleta heshima katika familia zao. Binti umri unaenda, anatamani kuingia kwenye ndoa lakini hapati wa kumuoa. Au mwingine inatokea, anatamani kuolewa lakini anaishia kupigwa mimba na kuachwa.Badala ya kuleta heshima, analeta aibu katika familia yake kutokana na mila na desturi zetu kumtaka binti azae pale tu atakapokuwa ameolewa. Azae pale atakapokuwa kwa mumewe na si vinginevyo. Inapotokea bahati mbaya basi ni mara moja na si kuzaa na kuzaa watoto kibao.Pamoja na kuwa ndoa ni mpango wa Mungu lakini hivi umeshawahi kujiuliza wanaolewa wanakuwa na sifa gani? Kwa nini wanaume wanavutiwa nao? Wanakuwa na kitu gani cha ziada ambacho wanawake wengine hawana? Leo nitakuambia!Jamani, sifa ya kwanza ambayo mwanamke anapaswa kuwa nayo ni ile hulka ya kuwa mke. Wanaume wengi huwa wanapenda kuishi na mwanamke ambaye ana ile sifa ya kuwa mke. Mwanamke atakayeelewa kwamba muunganiko wa ndoa una pande mbili hivyo kuwajali ndugu wa pande zote mbili, ndugu zake na ndugu wa upande wa mumewe. Mwanamke ambaye atakuwa na muonekano wa mke kwa maana ya mavazi na hata mazungumzo.Wanaoolewa jamani wanakuwa na sifa ya uvumilivu. Wanakuwa na hofu ya Mungu. Mwanamke mwenye hofu ya Mungu, anamuomba yeye ampatie mwanaume mcha Mungu na kweli inatokea. General Strike Underway in Hong Kong, Leader Refuses to Resign
A general strike has paralyzed Hong Kong Monday, preventing people from getting to work and forcing cancellation of more than 200 flights.Speaking to reporters the city's embattled leader, Beijing-backed Carrie Lam, said protesters were pushing the city to the verge of an "extremely dangerous situation."Lam again rejected repeated calls from protesters for her resignation and said the government is determined to maintaining law and order.She also said that the government will not satisfy another key demand put forward by protesters to release those who have been arrested during protests of recent weeks. In a now familiar formula, scores of protesters would arrive at a location and build barricades where they would remain until riot police arrived. A minority would stay behind and face tear gas as scores escaped through the public transit network to a new location. The Chinese-controlled financial hub is facing its worst political crisis since its handover to China in 1997, which began with protests against an extradition bill, already suspended, that would have allowed people to be sent to mainland China for trial and have since evolved into calls for greater democracy.

Kashmiri Leaders Under House Arrest as Tensions Rise in Region
Three top politicians in Indian Kashmir have been placed under house arrest and strict security measures have been ordered in the region where tensions have sparked after the government ordered visitors to evacuate and deployed more troops. In a late night order Sunday, restrictions were placed on public movements in Kashmir, internet services suspended and educational institutions shut. The order said that indefinite security restrictions will be applicable in the main district of Kashmir’s capital, Srinagar.The latest measures come as thousands of pilgrims and tourists have been leaving Kashmir since Friday when authorities said that militants backed by Pakistan were planning an attack on an annual Hindu pilgrimage. In an unprecedented step, the pilgrimage was halted. Just days ago, about 10,000 additional paramilitary troops were deployed in major towns across the region. The series of measures in Kashmir have sparked speculation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government plans to revoke special privileges in the region, including one that prevents people from outside the state from buying property there.The politicians under house arrest, who head regional political parties, have warned the government that any attempt to revoke these privileges could spark a backlash in India’s only Muslim majority region. Hours before they were placed under house arrest, they held a meeting and in a statement vowed to fight to safeguard the special status and what they called the “identity” of Kashmir.
